Premier inspects irregularly low Mekong River

VIENTIANE,MACH 10 (KPL) - Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh and his delegates earlier this week monitored the unusual low level of the Mekong River, which is badly affecting irrigation facilities feeding dry-season rice production and the production of water supply in Vientiane Capital.
The water level of the Mekong River is far worse if compared to the previous year’s corresponding period.
Seeing as a terrible matter, ministries concerned and Vientiane Capital have gathered to address the problem by using extractors to make a channel access to the headwork of irrigation stations and the big scale irrigation system have been aided by small water pumps.
The water supply for irrigation system for the dry cash crop cultivation is back to normal.
After hearing the report, the Premier and officials inspected the irrigation stations along the Mekong River bank in Park Ngum and Hardsaifong districts and Kaoliao water supply plant in Sikhottabong district.
The Department of Irrigation has dispatched a number of technical staffs to monitor and work with the Vientiane Agriculture and Forestry Service to cope with the shortage of water feeding the irrigation system by endorsing hundreds of millions kip spent on other facilities, according to the briefing by the Department of Irrigation to the visitors.
Earlier, irrigation facilities had gone out of operation for some time and have now been repaired and the water supply for irrigation facilities have returned to normal. If the water level of the Mekong River further went down for 20-30 cm, the state of water shortage would be looming.
Currently, the Kaoliao water supply plant has a daily supply capacity of only 20,000-30,000 cubic metres, which decreases by more than half.
This makes the water supply in the capital insufficient.
The Vientiane Capital Water Supply Enterprise has already bought some water pumps with a daily pumping capacity of 20,000 cubic metres. The installation is underway and is expected to be completed in next two weeks.
