Energy ministry warns against speculative hoarding of LPG

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) -- Thailand's Energy Ministry has warned dealers against hoarding liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to speculate -- even as it is confident that there would be no LPG shortage in the country.
Commenting on reports that a number of LPG service stations have started hoarding the alternative fuel, causing a severe shortage after dealers learned that the ministry would float LPG prices in the transport and industrial sectors, Permanent Secretary for Energy Pornchai Rujiprapa said dealers should not hoard because they may suffer losses and it is also illegal.
Mr. Pornchai said floating the price of LPG would not be done soon. He indicated that the LPG shortage was caused by more motorists now using it, and from transport delays from Laem Chabang industrial estate to Bangkok.
However, the transport problem is now resolved and there would be no further shortage, he said.
Sources said the ministry plans to float the price of LPG would be in line with the world price and simultaneously reduces the Thai government burden in subsidising it.
PTT deputy managing director Chaiwat Choorit said there were
transportation complications between Si Racha and Bangkok during the past few days due to congestion at the port.
The problem is now solved, he said, adding that an additional 22,000 tons of LPG would be imported this week.
Mr. Chaiwat said he expected that LPG imports would be made throughout the year to meet with rising domestic consumption, which has now jumped to 3.5 million tons from about 3 million tons last year.
