Japan's Mikuriya Elected Chief of World Customs Body
Geneva, June 30 (Jiji Press)--The World Customs Organization at a general meeting in Geneva Saturday elected Kunio Mikuriya, a former Japanese Finance Ministry official, as its next secretary-general.
Mikuriya, 54, will become the first WCO chief from Asia, with his
five-year term of office set to start on Jan. 1, 2009.
In the election, Mikuriya, now serving as deputy secretary-general
of the WCO, beat his eight contenders, including those from Sweden, Belgium
and China.
The WCO, established in 1952, has 173 countries and regions as its
members.
The organization is in charge of the development of global
standards on and the simplification and harmonization of customs procedures.
It is also working to facilitate global trade and strengthen the
protection of intellectual property rights.
