STYLO FASHION GP ADVOCATES ENVIROMENTAL MESSAGE

KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's biggest fashion event returns
for the third consecutive year on March 25 and this time around, Stylo Fashion
Grand Prix Kuala Lumpur 2010 advocates a strong environmental message -
"Recycling Is The New Black".

Running for eight days, the fashion event with the theme "Fashion
to Art, Art to Fashion", will feature the work of over 70 fashion designers and
100 artists.

Stylo president and chief executive officer Nancy Yeoh said with
the issues of global warming and other natural catastrophe brought on by neglect
to Mother earth, it was important that this issue be raised at every avenue
possible.

To bring the environmentally-conscious Fashion and Art theme to life, the
artists would collaborate with the National Art Gallery to construct 28 giant
sculptures which would be placed in much-visited tourist spots in Kuala Lumpur,
she said.

"The items used to construct these sculptures are everyday items that we
typically throw away as garbage.

"We decided to express our concerns for the environment in the form of art
sculptures made by recyclable wastes material in the guise of fashion items,"
she told reporters after attending the signing ceremony of memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with media partners and industry associates, here Thursday.

She said the efforts had allowed a lot of waste material to be recycled into
works or art, measuring 2.5 metres (m) and 6.5 m and weighing from 30kgs to 100
kgs.

"That's a lot of waste recycled into giant fashion sculptures to beautify
our city in the run up to the Formula One in Sepang," she said.

Unveiled at the Pavilion KL today and to stay for the duration of the
festival were seven characters in the guise of a stiletto, a button, a bag, a
necktie, a pair of sunglasses, a necklace and a dress, constructed purely
from carton boxes, magazines, tin cans, plastic, newspapers and fabrics.

Yeoh said fashion bodies such as Malaysian Official Designers Association
(Moda), Bumiputra Designers Association (BDA) and the Islamic Fashion Festival
as well as independant Malaysian designers would be featured in the fashion
event.

Apart from renowned local fashion designers such as Tom Abang
Saufi, Khoon Hooi, Bill Keith, Jovian Mandagie, Hatta Dolmat and Michael Ong who
were in the list, international designers such as Nina Butkovich and
Marko Mitanovkski would also be making their appearance, she said.
