Two art exhibitions timed to Putin's visit to India.



NEW DELHI, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Two exhibitions of the works of
Russian artists timed to the visit of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to
India will open in New Delhi on Friday.

The first one to be opened in the National Gallery of Modern Arts by
Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Sobyanin will comprise 75 works by Nikolai
Roerich, who lived and died in India.
Over a half of the works were provided by the International Roerich
Center in Moscow, while others arrived from Roerich memorial center in
Kulu and from various Indian museums.
Gallery Director Rajiv Lochan said the display is unprecedented by the
big number of Roerich's paintings.
"Nikolai Roerich's creativity was a symbol of unification of Indian
and Russian cultures," Lochan said.
The second exhibition called the Russian Winter will open in the
Russian Science and Culture Center and will feature works of Russian
artists of XIX-XX centuries from the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
Thirty-three paintings by Igor Grabar, Alexander Gerasimov, Boris
Kustodiyev, Konstantin Makovsky, Alexei Savrasov are all devoted to
Russian winter.
"Russian winter is truly exotic for hot India. We want to show how
beautiful it is," said Yevgeniya Petrova, deputy director of the Russian
Museum.

.Russian region reports 72 pensioners over 100 years of age.

CHELYABINSK, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- The Chelyabinsk region in the
Urals said it has 76 pensioners over a hundred years of age and the record
holder is Khabibamal Khametova from the town of Ozersk.
She is 119 and has 68 grandchildren, 40 grand-grandchildren and 16
grand-grand-grandchildren, the regional Pension fund said on Friday.
Only seven centenarians are males and the rest are females, but all of
them live in families with numerous grandchildren and grand-grandchildren.
"There are no pensioners over a hundred years of age in homes for the
elderly," the Pension fund said.
It said Makei Zhanatayeva, 106, from the settlement of Krasnoarmeisk
held the second place in longevity standings followed by Sulu Ishtuganova,
105, from the settlement of Magnitka.

.Japanese economy not yet self-sustaining.

TOKYO, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Japanese Finance Minister Naoto Kan
said on Friday the national economy had improved in recent weeks, but was
not self-sustaining yet.
There is no "sustainable recovery," he told a press conference, adding
the economy was "taking one step toward" better conditions.
Kyodo News quoted the government as saying on Thursday that Japan's
economy grew an annualized 3.8 percent in real terms in the
October-December quarter, slower than the initially reported 4.6 percent.

.Russia to continue providing aid to Chile.

SANTIAGO, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia will continue providing aid
to quake-hit Chile, Russian presidential envoy who attended the
inauguration of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera told Tass on Thursday.
Artur Chilingarov, the presidential special representative for
international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, said he extended a
message from President Dmitry Medvedev to Pinera.
"We shall continue rendering aid to Chile and the message of the
Russian president speaks about it, in particular," Chilingarov said.
Russia delivered 56 tons of relief to Chile after the devastating
quake in February.
Chilingarov wished to Chile "an early elimination of the aftermath of
the strong earthquake and complete recovery of the beautiful country."
He said Pinera invited Medvedev to visit Chile.
At present an agreement on partnership relations between the two
countries is being drafted. "We hope the document will become the platform
for further development of Russian-Chilean interaction," Chilingarov said.
Russian Ambassador to Chile Yuri Filatov told Tass no Russians were
injured by the new tremors that occurred during inauguration.

.Russia's Bashkiria to host Pink Panther jazz festival.

UFA, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's Muslim Republic of Bashkiria
will become the world jazz center for three days as the Pink Panther
festival opens in the State Philharmonic on Friday.
Versatile American jazzman Gregory Porter will open the festival
together with drummer Oleg Butman and his Jazz Passion group.
American jazz singer Sharon Clarke will open the second day of the
festival and will perform together with local Ufa groups.
The Pink Panther festival, which will turn 15 this year, will offer a
mixture of world jazz stars, Russian performers, and their joint concert.
