NEW DELHI, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia and India signed several
documents on the cooperation in the nuclear industry and
telecommunications. The signing ceremony was held after the talks between
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Indian counterpart Manmohan
Singh.
In particular, the countries signed an intergovernmental agreement on
cooperation in the peaceful nuclear power use, as well as "an action plant
for developing large-scale Russian-Indian cooperation in the peaceful use
of atomic energy in 2010."
The sides signed a memorandum of mutual understanding to expand the
cooperation to build new power units at the Kudankulam nuclear power
plant. The construction of the 3rd and 4th power units at the Kudankulam
NPP will be launched next year under the contract signed on Friday. "All
preparatory works will be completed next year and the major stage of
construction will be launched," chief of the Rosatom state corporation
Sergei Kiriyenko said. He also noted that the 5th and 6th power units at
the Kudankulam NPP will be built during the next 12th five-year planned
period. Russia and India are discussing an opportunity to build up to
eight power units at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.
Meanwhile, India will grant to Russia a new site to build a nuclear
power plant after 2017, Kiriyenko said, adding that two power units will
be built at the Haripur nuclear power plant.
The countries also signed a document on setting up a joint venture for
the production of the ground navigation equipment controlled by the
Russian satellite global navigation system GLONASS.
Russia and India signed a memorandum on cooperation in the sphere of
mineral fertilizers, as well as a framework agreement (contract) for
mineral fertilizers supplies in India.
Several other agreements were signed during Putin's visit in India.
