BABIES ALSO AT RISK OF CANCER

KOTA BAHARU (Malaysia), March 13 (Bernama) -- Babies as young as a year old
are at risk of being afflicted by various types of cancer, said Hospital
Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Health Science Studies Centre senior lecturer
and nutrionist Dr Foo Leng Huat.

Foo said, according to initial studies carried out by the centre, among the
factors causing babies to succumb to cancer included heriditary ones, the
environment and illnesses suffered by the mother during pregnancy.

"Most people think only adults are susceptible to being afflicted by cancer
but our initial studies shows it is not the case," he told reporters after
attending a community programme in aid of cancer-stricken children a the
hospital here Friday.

Foo, however, cautioned that the studies were only at the initial stages and
that more needed to be done to find out why babies too were at risk of cancer.

Some 35 children warded at the oncology ward of the hospital were given
special attention during the programme, which was jointly organised by the
centre and the National Cancer Council.
