Russia first lady to open "From Russia with Love" in Keukenhof.

THE HAGUE, March 17 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's First Lady Svetlana
Medvedeva will conduct Wednesday the opening of the 61st season in the
famous flower park Keukenhof in the Netherlands. This year it will be
Russian-style and the announced theme is "From Russia with Love".
Medvedeva will take part in this most grandiose flower show in the
world at the invitation of Her Royal Highness Princess Maxima - the wife
of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander.
Although Keukenhof is available to the visitors only two months in a
year - from mid-March till mid-May, it is by right considered the most
conspicuous place of interest in the Netherlands. Its territory of 79,07
acres is a reign of gloriousness and variety of 7 million flowers showing
their beauty to the connoisseurs by the beginning of the season.
Hyacinths, crocuses, narcissi and, undoubtedly, tulips of most diversified
species and shades, planted along the garden roads, canals and ponds,
around fountains and sculptures, make up an endless live carpet with a
peculiar pattern. In the pavilions the flower-lovers' eyes enjoy the sight
of warmth-loving orchids and lilies.
Annually some 850,000 visitors from all around the world come to the
town of Lisse, where Keukenhof is located, to admire the vividness of
colors and the fantasy of Dutch gardeners. Since the opening of Keukenhof
in 1949 the flowers' kingdom has been visited approximately by 44 million
people. The annual income of the park amounts to dozens of million euros,
not only from the entrance tickets sale, but from the trade by the famous
Holland's tulips' bulbs as well. These are very willingly purchased by the
tourists.
The seriousness of attitude towards each new season of the flower park
in the Netherlands itself is demonstrated by the level of guests attending
the opening ceremony. In the past years there were Prime Minister of the
Netherlands Jan Peter Balkenende, Her Royal Highness the Swedish Princess
Victoria, the royal pairs from Norway, United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain,
famous actors, politicians and scientists among others.
Each Keukenhof season is dedicated to a new theme, for example the
400th anniversary of Rembrandt van Rijn's birthday in 2006; to the 300th
anniversary of the Swedish scientist Karl Linneous in 2007, to the Olympic
Games in China in 2008, and the 400th anniversary since the foundation of
New Amsterdam in New-York in 2009. This year the season is devoted to
Russia, and the park gardeners have planted around the main pavilion a
bizarre flower mosaic, depicting the Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.
Besides, Russian park scenery, the Russian romantic garden, the
characteristic animals in the children's playground and the "inevitable"
dacha and matryoshka are represented here.
According to the Director-General of Keukenhof Piet de Vries, "Russia
is a gigantic, beautiful and mysterious country with an unusual past. It
is exactly these aspects that we would like to emphasize in our
exhibition".
