YEMEN, MALAYSIA BUSINESS COMMUNITIES ASKED TO FORM ALLIANCES

From Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar

SANA'A, March 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian and Yemeni business communities must
continue efforts to venture deeper into each other's business terrain and form
smart alliance to boost bilateral trade and investment.

Malaysian Ambassador to Yemen, Abdul Samad Othman, said both business
communities should focus on exchanging experience and knowledge, while at the
same time explore and expand trade as well as investment opportunities for their
products and services.

"Let us work together to achieve greater cooperation in various sectors so
that strategic and dynamic business networking between us could be formed and
formalised," he said at the opening of the Malaysian Yemen Festival 2010 here
Wednesday.

The festival, starting today until March 20 at the Sana'a Expo Centre, was
launched by Yemen Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Mujawwar.

It is organised by Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce and General
Investment Authority of Yemen, the authority in charge of regulating and
promoting the investments.

The festival aims to familiarise Malaysian business community with the
business environment in Yemen and help form strategic alliances with potential
business partners, while at the same time celebrate the growing bilateral ties.

Bilateral trade has grown steadily over the past decade.

Malaysia's exports to Yemen rose to US$335 million (US$1=RM3.27) in 2008
from US$44.6 million in 1990 while imports increased to US$46.8 million from
US$3.1 million.

To date, Malaysian investments in Yemen are worth US$15.5 million, mostly in
minerals and mining sectors.

Abdul Samad said Malaysian business community has shown great interest to
forge greater economic integration with their counterparts in Yemen based on
strong political and economies ties that had been built based upon common value
of genuine partnership.

He said business communities should also boost networking, research and
development as well as exchange human resources.

"We are happy to see consistent economic progress that Yemen is achieving
for the past years. Yemen's economic development continues to flourish despite
many challenges," he said.
