Tajikistan, Turkmenistan develop bilateral cooperation.
DUSHANBE, March 18 (Itar-Tass) - Turkmen President Gurbanguly
Berdymukhamedov highly appraised the level of bilateral relations with
Tajikistan - an important Turkmen partner in the region, at a joint press
conference held by the Turkmen and Tajik presidents in Dushanbe. The
Turkmen president arrived in Dushanbe on a state visit on Thursday morning.
The talks held in an open and constructive spirit confirmed the
adherence of the two countries to steadfast broadening of cooperation and
strengthening of bilateral contacts between the fraternal people, the
Turkmen president told the press conference. He said that bilateral
relations were developing dynamically, in compliance with the principles
of equality and mutual advantage. President Berdymukhamedov underlined a
special character of relations between the two countries connected by
age-long traditions of good-neighborly relations and common history of
culture.
The Turkmen president reaffirmed mutual aspirations to promote
positive regional processes, actively cooperate in the struggle against
extremism, trans-border crime and drugs trafficking.
Commenting on the Afghan problem raised at the talks President
Berdymukhamedov said that Turkmenistan and Tajikistan come out for Afghan
settlements by peaceful political and diplomatic means with active
participation of the United Nations and UN structures - in particular, the
UN regional center of preventive diplomacy in Central Asia.
As a result of the talks held in a narrow and extended formats seven
documents have been signed -a joint statement, an intergovernmental
agreement on cooperation between the transport and communications
ministries, justice ministries, the two sides adopted a program on
cooperation between the foreign policy departments for 2010 -2011 and
signed an agreement on cooperation between the national Olympic committees.
Upon completion of the joint press conference an awarding ceremony
was held for President Berdymukhamedov, who was awarded one of the highest
Tajik decorations - the Order of Ismoil Somoni of the First degree, at the
Palace of Nations. The award goes to the Turkmen president for merit in
strengthening of friendship and development of cooperation between the
people of the two countries, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon declared.
