YEMEN INTERESTED TO STUDY MALAYSIA'S TRANSFORMATION EXPERIENCE
From Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar
SANA'A, March 19 (Bernama) -- Yemen's General Investment Authority (GIA) is interested to study Malaysia's experience in transforming the country from agricultural to an industrial economy.
Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) president, Syed Ali Alattas, said
GIA has launched various administration reforms in an effort to woo foreign
direct investments via tax exemption and incentives.
"We took 30 years to transform our economy, but if GIA learns from us their
economy will rise sooner than us," he told Bernama in an interview here
Thursday.
Syed Ali had a meeting with GIA chairman, Salah Al-Atar, recently.
He said the country's ranking as one of the top 20 trading nations as well
as the biggest sukuk market issuer in the world at the moment has attracted the
attention of GIA.
Syed Ali said Yemen could serve as an effective gateway to the Gulf and
African markets, just as Malaysia could serve as the springboard to the East
Asian in view of Yemen's strategic location.
The GIA, established in 1992, is the authority in charge of regulating and
promoting the investments.
It functions as a one-stop centre to promote investments in Yemen and
provide investment services to investors.
He said GIA has expressed interest to strengthen bilateral business and
economic relations.
"We believe the business communities of the two countries should take this
opportunity and build strong cooperation. We are confident local companies can
work closely with Yemeni business community to identify meaningful business
networking," he said.
Syed Ali said the relationships between the business communities from both
countries would be further strengthened with the signing of memorandums of
understanding (MOUs) between DPMM and the Federation of Yemen Chambers of
Commerce and Industry as well as with Sana'a Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Under the MOUs, the chambers would exchange business information, research
and technology expertise, he said.
DPMM is organising the Malaysia-Yemen Festival 2010 to commemorate the
growing bilateral ties and promote economic development in both countries
beginning from March 17-20 at the Sana'a Expo Centre.
