Medvedev to meet Clinton

MOSCOW, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will
meet U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday to discuss
preparations of a new strategic arms reductions treaty, the Iranian
nuclear program, and the Middle East settlement.
"Among the main topics of Russian-U.S. interaction there are
preparations of a new treaty on the reduction of strategic offensive
armaments. The Geneva talks between the Russian and U.S. delegations on
the issue have entered the final stage," a Kremlin official told Tass.
He recalled the telephone conversation between Medvedev and U.S.
President Barack Obama on March 13, saying "now the talk can be about a
concrete date of submission of the document to the heads of state." The
Previous START expired in December.
The official said Medvedev and Clinton will also discuss "key
international problems", including the Iranian nuclear program, the Middle
East settlement and a possible resumption of Palestinian-Israeli
negotiations, stabilization in Afghanistan and an early development of the
country into a sovereign and self-sustainable state.
Clinton will also meet Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday.
.Putin to discuss spring sowing campaign.
MOSCOW, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will
hold a teleconference with regional governors on Friday to discuss
preparations for spring sowing campaign, the government press service said.
"It is planned to consider several vital issues in the sphere of
agro-industrial complex. Organizational measures will be discussed to
promote timely seasonal field works and agricultural production in 2010,"
it said.
The Russian federal budget appropriates over 25 billion rubles for
seasonal field works this year.
.Russia's Zaripov wins gold in 10km Paralympic ski race.
OTTAWA, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's Irek Zaripov won the gold
medal in 10-kilometer sitting ski race at the Paralympic Winter Games in
Vancouver on Thursday.
Italian Enzo Masiello was second and Belarussian Dmitry Loban was
third.
The Russian Paralympic team continues to lead with 28 medals (nine
gold, 12 silver, 7 bronze) followed by Germany (17 medals) and Ukraine
(15).
.MidEast Quarter to meet in Moscow.
MOSCOW, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- The Middle East Quartet will meet in
Moscow on Friday to search for ways of resuming Palestinian-Israeli
negotiations and ending the current deadlock in the Middle East.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton, Quartet's special representative Tony Blair, and European
Commissioner for External Relations Catherine Ashton have arrived.
"The meeting is called to discuss the difficult situation that has
formed in the Middle East settlement process, as well as ideas that the
Quartet may offer to the sides in order to create conditions for the
resumption of talks," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"The Quartet participants are determined to adopt a document, which
will contain concrete and unambiguous positions and confirm all previous
resolutions by the world community on the conditions and parameters of
direct talks between Israel and Palestine. The Quartet is also determined
to achieve its decisions to be carried out," he stressed.
"As for the parties' reaction, we hope it will be constructive," the
minister said.
At the same time, Lavrov refused to forecast if the meeting is
effective for the Middle East settlement. "I have no facility to divine
what the future will be like," he said.
Ban Ki-moon expressed hope the meeting will give a boost to the
efforts aimed at resuming talks between Israelis and Palestinians.
He said he was inspired by the Russian initiative to convene the
Quarter in Moscow and said the meeting was very timely.
.Israel strikes at Gaza.
LONDON, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- Israeli aircraft struck at least six
targets in the Gaza Strip on Friday a day after a rocket fired from the
Palestinian enclave killed a Thai worker in Israel, Reuters reported from
Gaza citing Hamas security officials and witnesses.
The strikes took place as the Middle East Quartet meets in Moscow on
Friday to promote the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli talks.
Reuters quoted an Israeli military spokesman saying the targets
included two tunnels near the Israeli border fence and a weapons
manufacturing site.
"Direct hits were identified," he said.
Israel warned of a strong response to the first deadly rocket fire
from Gaza in more than a year.
