Ukraine to develop relations with Russia and European Union.
KIEV, March 20 (Itar-Tass) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstantin
Grishchenko has said in an interview with the Inter television channel
that Ukraine will never allow any organization or structure of which it's
going to be a member to be directed against Russia.
"It's not because it's theoretically impossible. It's simply unnatural
and doesn't meet the profound interests of our two countries," the
Ukrainian foreign minister went on to say.
"Without normal and predictable relations with Russia we are unlikely
to progress in our relations with the European Union," Grishchenko
explained.
President Viktor Yanukovich has announced Ukraine's top foreign policy
priorities.
"This is a triangle: Russia-the European Union - the United States",
Grishchenko emphasized.
"We will simultaneously build relations with Russia and with Europe.
This is what Moscow, Brussels and other European capitals are expecting
from us. Washington has also come to understand that such a policy is
necessary for world peace," the Ukrainian foreign minister said.
"We should take advantage of a situation when the world community has
eventually come to realize that stability and predictable progress in
Ukraine is in everybody's interest. In fact, a choice exclusively in
favour of the European direction no longer meets global realities. We
should develop better contacts with China, India and other countries,"
Grishchenko went on to say.
Asked to comment whether the Ukrainian parliament was going to ratify
an agreement on Ukraine's membership in the CIS, the Ukrainian foreign
minister said that Ukrainian leaders should ponder over this issue.
As for Ukraine's recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South
Ossetia, Grishchenko said he didn't understand how that question could be
considered in the context of Ukrainian interests.
