Violent clashes rock Jammu, MP among 30 injured
Jammu, July 2 (PTI) - Police opened fire and burst teargas
shells to quell workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
and the Shiv Sena who demonstrated at various places across
the state Tuesday.
Protestors were demanding removal of Governor N. N. Vohra
over his controversial decision to hand over affairs of the
Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to the state government.
At least 30 people including four policemen were injured
over 50 protesters arrested. Police opened fire at several
places as demonstrators burnt tyres and effigies.
Congress MP Lal Singh was manhandled and suffered
injuries. His vehicle was damaged in stone pelting on the
Jammu-Pathankote highway in Samba district.
Over 3,000 migrants and locals blocked the Jammu-Poonch
highway and burnt effigies of State Governor N. N. Vohra,
Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad and People's Democratic Party
Patron Mufti Sayeed at Muthi area of the city, official
sources told PTI.
Migrants and locals clashed with police after mob
attacked vehicle of SP and clashes continued for over one
hour amid firing of teargas shells and cane charge. They
tried to take out procession to jammu city, they said.
As the situation became worse, police fired 30 to 40
rounds in the air and opened teargas shells to disperse the
mobs.
The Jammu and Kashmir government announced closure of
schools, colleges and educational institutions in view of the
bandh as a precautionary measure. Examinations of management
courses and common entrance tests at the Jammu University have
been postponed.
The Jammu Bar Association lent its support to the
shutdown. Petrol pumps remained shut through the day.
Authorities clamped Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure
Code which bans unlawful assembly of people to check riots and
maintain peace. Officials said additional policemen have been
deployed at sensitive places.
Police and para-military personnel patrolled the city
streets as normal life was thrown out of gear with most shops
and business establishments closed.
Ahead of their proposed rally in Srinagar, the Jammu and
Kashmir government has placed almost all separatist leaders
under house arrest.
The leaders include chairman of the moderate faction of
the Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, senior amalgam
leader Shabir Ahmad Shah and JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik.
Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani and several second
rung separatist leaders have gone into hiding, sources said.
