European prosecutors to discuss human rights protection
ST PETERSBURG, July 2 (Itar-Tass) - Prosecutors-General from 47
European countries gather here on Wednesday in Constantine Palace near
here for a two-day conference organised By the Office of
Prosecutor-General of the Russian Federation and the Council of Europe, to exchange opinions about the role of public prosecutors' offices in the protection of human rights and public interests and determine basic orientations for activities in this respect.
The conference on the theme of "The Role of Public Prosecutor's
Departments in the Protection of Human Rights and Public Interests Outside
the Criminal Law Sphere" is to be held under the chairmanship of Russian
Prosecutor-General Yuri Chaika, who will make a report on the main subject
of discussion.
Terry Davis, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe (CE), Thomas
Hammarberg, CE Commissioner for Human Rights, Philippe Bouaya, CE General
Director on Human Rights and Legal Affairs, and representatives of
international organisations are expected to attend the conference.
Provision has been made for a series of bilateral meetings between the
Russian Prosecutor-General and his foreign counterparts.
