TWO MINISTERS INSPECT FLOOD-AFFECTED AREAS IN KARAWANG

Jakarta, March 26 (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono and Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufrei inspected flood-affected areas in Karawang, West Java, on Friday.

The two ministers in the inspection brought along Rp500 million in cash to assist the flood victims in Karawang.

On the occasion, Ministers Agung Laksono and Salim Segaf inspected Bintang Alam housing complex at Teluk Jambe village in Teluk Jambe Timor subdistrict that bore the brunt of the flood with 50 centimeters to two meters deep.

Besides inspecting Teluk Jambe village, the two ministers also visited the refugee camp at the Karawang Islamic Center on Jenderal Ahmad Yani street.

Agung Laksono said the money would be used during the emergency response situation.

He added that Social Affairs Ministry had earlier granted a financial assistance of Rp200 million, followed by National Disaster Management Board with Rp200 million.

"Therefore the total amount of financial assistance from the central government to the flood victims in Karawang has reached Rp900 million," Laksono said.

Meanwhile, Karawang district head Dadang Muchtar reported to the two ministers that the floods had forced 65,000 people in Karawang to evacuate.

"Based on the latest report we received on Friday, 65,000 people have been forced to evacuate," Dadang told the visiting ministers.

Dadang said the floods had inundated 16,778 houses, 879 hectares of rice fields, some 35 villages, and 28 school buildings.

In order to halt the spread of floods to other areas, Dadang Muchtar had asked the Jatiluhur Dam authorities to optimize the release of waters from the dam.

"By optimizing the dam water release, the floods could be halted from submerging more areas along the Citarum Rivers in Karawang and Bekasi districts," he said.

On Wednesday, Vice President Boediono had ordered Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Radjasa to pay serious attention to the fate of farmers whose paddy fields were destroyed by floods.

The vice president asked Hatta to assess the impacts of floods on the rice production parts of Karawang district.
