FLOODS FORCE 65,000 PEOPLE IN KARAWANG TO EVACUATE

Karawang, March 26 (ANTARA) - Floods caused by the overflowing of the Citarum river have forced 65,000 people in Karawang, West Java, to evacuate, Karawang district head Dadang Muchtar said on Friday.

"Based on the latest report we received on Friday, 65,000 people have been forced to evacuate," Dadang told visiting Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono and Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufrie.

The two ministers inspected flood-affected areas in Karawang on Friday to get first hand information about the disaster which was caused by the overflowing the Citarum river.

Dadang said the floods had inundated 16,778 houses, 879 hectares of rice field, some 35 villages, and 28 schools.

According to Dadang, ministers Agung Laksono and Salim Segaf also inspected the Bintang Alam housing complex at Teluk Jambe village which bore the brunt of the floods with 50 centimeters to two meters deep.

In order to halt the spread of floods to other areas, Dadang Muchatar had asked the Jatiluhur Dam authorities to optimize the release of water from the dam.

"By optimizing the dam water release, the floods could be halted from submerging a more areas along the Citarum Rivers in Karawang and Bekasi districts," he said.

On Wednesday, Vice President Boediono had ordered Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Radjasa to pay serious attention to the fate of farmers whose paddy fields were destroyed by floods.

Vice President Boediono asked Hatta to assess the impacts of floods on the rice production parts of Karawang district, he said.

The local farmers themselves had expressed their deep concern about the natural disaster's impacts.

Over the past weeks, torrential rains have been showering various parts of Indonesia, causing floods and landslides in some areas.

This week, the floods have not only inundated the Karawang areas but also Sarolangun district in Jambi Province.
