POLICE MUST BE RESPONSIVE TO DEVELOPMENTS IN NATIONAL SECURITY - DPM
KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) -- The police force must be more responsive
to developments in national security and not just focus on traditional safety
matters like prevention of crime, drugs abuse and extremism said Deputy Prime
Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin said safety aspects of economy, health, environment must also be
given priority since these are areas that also has the potential to affect the
country's security.
"Police must be able to realise and be responsive towards any criminal
development. It is important for police to identify and take remedial measures
to overcome such threats effectively and that can be accepted by the people,"
said Muhyiddin in his text speech that was read by Home Minister Hishammuddin
Tun Hussein at a dinner held in conjunction with the 203rd Police
Day celebrations here Friday night.
He added that police must also organise more dynamic strategy in efforts to
prevent crime comprehensively.
Muhyiddin said the peoples' confidence in the police force would slowly
erode if criminal activities continue to increase because the people and foreign
investors would feel insecure.
"The acceptance of the people towards the police force will also depend on
their efficiency and effectiveness in making quick and correct decisions," he
said.
Muhyiddin said criticism and conflicts when trying to resolve certain issues
cannot be avoided, especially so, when people try to belittle the police force.
Such situations can become worst due to perception and accusations by some,
that the government was using the police force as a tool for their own benefit.
He added that such situations can lead to a growth of anti-sentiments
against the police force and create more difficulties for the police to carry
out their duties and the law effectively.
"The reality of all this is certainly going to add on to the challenges
faced by the police force, but that must not dampen their spirit, when carrying
out their daily routine or duties," he said.
