YUDHOYONO HOPES CONGRESS ABLE TO MAKE DEMOCRAT PARTY BETTER

Jakarta, March 27 (ANTARA) - The chief patron of the ruling Democrat Pary, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, expressed hope here on Saturday that the party's congress in Bandung next May could produce decisions to make the party better.

In his speech at the opening of the party's national coordination meeting he said the national congress next May would be successful to make the party able to serve the people and the country better in the future.

"Although the Democrat Party is not yet 10 years old it has learned a lot and got much experience. In the future God willing we could make the party better," he said.

Yudhoyono said he wished the party could become a strong, centrist and modern party.

The congress next month would elect the party's new leadership for 2010 -2015, set new organizational structure to make the party more effective in carrying out its tasks, improving its internal rules and statute to reflect modern management and outline strategic policies and action plans for the next five years.

The first coordination meeting was held for the preparations of the congress.

The party's general chairman, Hadi Utomo, on the occasion reminded party members of the future challenges and responsibility the party would deal with particularly with regard to safeguarding the government's programs for 2009-2014.

"The challenges are clear. Even slanders have deliberately been launched against the Democrat Party and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Let us all remain strong and continue to strive so that the Democrat Party along with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono could carry out the pro-people programs," he said.

Hadi Utomo reminded all party members of the importance of assuring order in the election of the party's new general chairman in the congress later in line with the party's clean, civility and smart politics.

"Those wishing to run please go ahead by respecting political ethics, morals and legal corridors. I am still the general chairman now and therefore any activity must be made known to me," he said.

Some figures have already expressed readiness to run for the party's leadership, such as Andi Mallarangeng, the current minister of sports and youths, Anas Urbaningrum, the party's associate chairman and Marzuki Alie, the House of Representatives speaker.
