SERVICEMAN ARRESTED IN ANTI-DRUG OPERATION
Tangerang, Banten, March 27 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian police have arrested a serviceman for alleged involvement in an ecstasy (methamphetamine drug) making syndicate in Tangerang.
"The suspect has been handed over to the Jakarta military authorities," Director of the Indonesian police's narcotics investigation Brigadier General Arman Depari said here Saturday.
Police anti-drug personnel raided a building at Boulevard Street of Graha Jaya Block P-1 No.31 housing complex, Serpong Utara, South Tangerang city, Banten Province, on Friday.
In the raid, the police arrested five suspects and seized a gun, 12,000 ecstasy pills, and tablet printing equipment, and chemical substances used for making the methamphetamine drugs.
The suspects remained under the police investigation, he said.
Indonesia is among a number of Asian countries being seriously threatened by drug smuggling syndicates.
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) reported there were 3.6 million drug users in Indonesia in 2008.
The drug users came from various social and professional backgrounds, including artists, musicians, students, politicians, and policemen.
A police officer in Barito Utara district, Central Kalimantan province, was recently fired after a local court found him guilty of consuming methamphetamines.
