FOREIGN CONTROL OF OIL MUST BE EVALUATED
Medan, N Sumatra, March 28 (ANTARA) - Foreign control of national oil and gas must be reevaluated following the implementation of ASEAN free trade, especially China-Indonesia, an observer said here Sunday.
"The facts showed the government`s helplessness in the sluggish revenue income due to the oil and gas are dominated by foreigners, and it must be a main consideration of the sector," an economic observer of North Sumatra, Jhon Tafbu Ritonga said in Medan, Sunday.
The government`s difficulty lasted longer after the issuance of Law No. 22/2001 on Oil and Gas which is very detrimental to the interest of the people.
"The revised Law NO 22 of 2001 on oil and gas which also recommended by the House of Representatives last period was considered to be very urgent," John said.
There are also a strong presumption that the Oil and Gas act was initiated by he International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the letter of intent, he said.
"But the revisions were also become a hot ball that will ultimately hurt the government and people," he said.
The evaluation must also mention the subsidized fuel sales by the foreign players, which the government has done since 2010.
"I think it`s a strange move, the foreign investors had been given easy investment in Indonesia, especially that other products are still subsidized by the government," he said.
The Chairman of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) Medan, Abubakar Siddik, said that foreign company such as Petronas which is not contributing anything to the government and the people, and therefore should not be given any facilities in selling subsidized fuel, unlike Pertamina with benefits that some people can get from a variety of assistance.
The government must take foreign policy such as Petronas gas stations which allowed the selling subsidized fuel since January 2010, because the government cannot claim as easy as national gas stations, he said.
The government should really promote and encourage the people to love the products and contribute to local businesses amid the increasingly tight competition in ACFTA (ASEAN China Free Trade Area) Abubakar said.
