INDONESIAN FOOTWEAR IMPORTS FROM CHINA JUMP
Bandung, W Java, March 28 (ANTARA) - Indonesia`s footwear and toy imports from China jumped after the full implementation of the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) since early this year, a report shows.
In January, footwear imports from China rose significantly to Rp25 billion from Rp17 billion a month earlier, Secretary General of the Industry Ministry Agus Tjahajana said in a paper to a workshop here on Saturday night.
The figure went up to Rp27 billion in February, he said.
He said toy imports from China increased to Rp6 billion in January and moved up further to Rp10 billion in February from Rp5 billion in December last year.
The two types of products were among the Chinese goods that would fearfully flood the domestic market, he said.
Overall, Indonesia`s imports from China in the four months ended on February 28, 2010 fell, he said.
Over the period Indonesia`s imports from China were mostly made up of raw materials and auxiliary materials, he said.
He said Indonesia`s footwear imports from China in the first two months of this year accounted for 0.37 percent of the total. Meanwhile, toy imports represented 0.36 percent, food and beverage 0.33 percent, steel iron 9.39 percent and electronics 10.25 percent of the total.
"The data come from a report of the directorate general of customs and excise to the finance minister. The report was later sent to the industry minister as part of an early warning to face the ACFTA," he said.
He said the surge in footwear and toy imports had yet to adversely affect the domestic industries. As a matter of fact, the national footwear industry was making investment to revitalize its machinery in the face of ACFTA.
