ANTAM SHARES BOOST BEI INDEX

Jakarta, March 30 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) here on Tuesday morning got off to a strong start on mining industry Antam gains.

The BEI index rose 0.69 percent or 19.455 points to 2,814.186 points, and the LQ-45 index went up d 4.035 points or 0.74 percent to 548.684 points.

The Indonesian stocks opened higher as investors grabbed blue chip shares such as those of Antam, following a nickel price hike overseas, Ahmad Riyadi, a research analyst of PT Millenium Danathama Securities, said here on Tuesday.

Some 11.09 million shares of Antam were sold at a total value of Rp26.07 billion, at the final rate of Rp7,375 per share, or up Rp50.

The regional stock exchanges and Wall Street gains also helped boost the Indonesian stocks, he said.

The Wall Street index traded higher as the US dollar weakened against the euro.

Among top gainers at the BEI were Indo Tambang Mega shares that added Rp900 to Rp39,600, and Bukit Asam shares that advanced Rp250 to Rp73,500.

The BEI index has a big chance to move upward further and approach the level of 2,900 points, according to him.

Foreign investors actively bought the rupiah to buy shares at the BEI, he said.
