POLICE PURSUE GAYUS IN SINGAPORE

Jakarta, March 30 (ANTARA) - National police chief intelligence Commissioner General Ito Sumardi said the police had not arrested Gayus Tambunan nor that he had submitted himself to the police.

He however confirmed that a police team had gone to Singapore to find him.

"There has not been any surrendering," he said by cellular phone here on Tuesday.

He said the police teams were still in Singapore and also in Batam to find Gayus, sought for allegedly having embezzled Rp25 billion in tax-related money.

The media in Jakarta reported on Tuesday that the police were seeking to meet Gayus in Singapore to ask him to surrender but they still had problem repatriating him due to a lack of extradition agreement between Indonesia and Singapore.

The case of Gayus, a tax official, emerged after former national chief intelligence Commissioner General Susno Duadji revealed about a mafia practice in the police force in connection with a suspicious account of Gayus worth Rp25 billion.

Gayus left for Singapore while he was about to be questioned by the tax directorate general and the police about the account.
