LANDSLIDE CUTS OFF PADANG-BUKITTINGGI TRAFFIC
Padang, W Sumatra, March 31 (ANTARA) - A landslide in Cubadak Bungkung area, Kota Padang Panjang, West Sumatra Province, had cut off roads of trans-Sumatra highway linking Padang and Bukittinggi.
As a result, several hundreds of motorists could not continue their trip on Tuesday. Instead, they were trapped in the uncertain situation, a local government official said.
Coordinator of West Sumatra Province`s Natural Disaster Management Unit Ade Edwar said the landslide struck after several hours of torrential rain hit the areas between Padang Panjang and the waterfall of Anai Valley, Padang Pariaman regency.
The landslide of a cliff near the road shoulder buried two cars and seriously damaged four houses, he said, adding rescue workers and policemen worked together to evacuate 20 residents.
"We are waiting for excavators to clear the landslide burying the roads. We hope the roads will return to normal tomorrow," he said.
For the time being, the police closed the roads for motorists, he said.
Edwar further said that local residents and motorists need to remain alert on the impacts of the September 30, 2009 powerful earthquake that rocked Padang and some other parts of West Sumatra.
"Other unpredictable landslides can possibly happen in the aftermath of the September earthquake. Some cliffs in Anai Valley area and its surrounding areas have become unstable," he said.
Three days ago, a landslide from a hill in Central Bengkulu district, Bengkulu Province, had also crippled traffic.
Tens of motorists failed to continue their journey after the landslide covered the alternative roads of the trans-Sumatra highway linking Taba Penanjung in Central Bengkulu district to Bengkulu city.
ANTARA learned that the roads on hilly areas between the Central Bengkulu and Kepahiyang regencies were vulnerable to unpredictable landslides during the rainy season.
Over the past weeks, torrential rains have been showering various parts of Indonesia, causing floods and landslides in some areas.
On March 11, a landslide hit Ciawitali hamlet, Sukamekar village, Sukanagara sub-district in the West Java regency of Cianjur, destroying five houses and killing 10 people.
