bombings in the Moscow metro that took away the lives of 39 people.
Also, he voiced his full support in the "days of this harsh trial that
has befallen the people of Russia."
Fillon voiced the hope that the masterminds of the bombings will be
seized and brought to face justice.

.Clouds of vapor, gas rising up above volcanoes near Kamchatka's
capital.

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, March 31 (Itar-Tass) - Clouds of vapor and
gas were rising up Wednesday noon local time above the Avachinsky and
Koryaksky volcanoes located a few dozen kilometers away from Kamchatka's
capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
This natural phenomenon could be clearly seen from the city but the
activity of these 'home' volcanoes did not pose any risk for the
population, sources at the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of
Sciences said.
The seismic activity at both the Avachinsky and Koryaksky does not
exceed the background levels and the clouds of vapor and gas are mostly
seen at the same elevation as the volcanoes' summits /3.456 metes for the
Koryaksky and 2,700 meters for the Avachinsky/.
The clouds were extending into thin trails over a distance of a few
hundred meters towards the Avacha Bay.
The Avachinsky is located some 25 kilometers away from
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The spitfire giant is a popular site for
holidaymaking with local residents, many of whom take part in ascents to
its summit in the summer and autumn months of the year.
In the winter, the Avachinsky enjoys popularity with the fans of
extreme mountain skiing.
It is one of the 28 active volcanoes in the Kamchatkan volcano land.
Its last eruption was registered in January 1991 when lava streamed down
the slopes from its crater.
Prior to that, the Avachinsky had kept calm for 46 years.
The Koryaksky is located 28 kilometers away from the city and its
activation was registered in December 2008 for the first time after 1957.
It has been belching out vapors and gas for a whole year already and
the presence of volcanic ash in these exhausts was observed in the summer
of 2009.
However, there was no strong enough eruption that might pose risks for
the population centers. Developments at the two volcanoes are being kept
under permanent watch.

.Russian traveler's expedition gets to Chile, ready to move to Cape
Horn.

VLADIVOSTOK, March 31 (Itar-Tass) - An expedition led by the master of
Russian extreme traveling and circumnavigation, Fyodor Konyukhov, has
arrived in Chile where from it plans to start off on two yachts towards
Cape Horn.
The goal of the voyage to Cape Horn is to install a Russian Orthodox
Cross of Obeisance there.
The sea cruise will begin at the port of Punta Arenas. It was there
that Fyodor took a flight to the British polar station Patriot Hills in
Antarctica in 1995.
After getting to the icy continent then, he began a 66-days-long solo
march to the North Pole, which he completed successfully.
Upon arrival in Punta Arenas, the Russian yachtsmen received an
invitation to visit the Spanish trainer sail ship De Elcano that was built
in 1923.
The latter ship has a 250-strong crew consisting of 50 officers and
200 cadets. The incumbent Spanish King Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Filipe
each took a course of naval training on De Elcano, which is now taking
part in an international regatta dedicated to the discovery of the
Magellan Strait.
A total of ten sail ships from Spain, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina
started off from Rio de Janeiro. They plan turning around Cape Horn and
finishing at the Mexican port of Veracruz.
Fyodor and his friends were taken around De Elcano.
The Russian expedition is due to set off Thursday, April 1. The
yachtsmen hope to pass the Magellan Strait and the Beagle Channel and to
enter the Drake Strait where they will try to alight on Cape Horn.
Fyodor's son Oscar, who is expedition manager, said in a telephone
conversation from Moscow the crew includes sportsmen from Moscow, St
Petersburg, Saratov, Tolyatti, and Krasnodar.
The yachts have been provided by the famous U.S. navigator, Skip
Novak, who was the skipper of the first Soviet maxi yacht, the Fantasy,
that took part in a circumnavigation race in 1989 and 1990.
The Cross of Obeisance that will be installed on Cape Horn was made at
the same school of arts in the Belarussian city of Bobruisk where Fyodor
got secondary artistic education at the start of his extremely versatile
and eventful career.
The Cross will be put up at Cape Horn's southernmost island and the
Russian expedition will first have to wait "for a window of favorable
weather" there so as to be able to alight. The most typical weather in the
Drake Strait is characterized by low temperatures and storms.
Cape Horn is known worldwide as the graveyard of ships. It was
discovered by Dutch navigators in 1616 and got its name from the Dutch
city of Hoorn.
