FLOODS INUNDATE THREE VILLAGES IN MADURA
Sampang, East Java, April 1 (ANTARA) - Floods inundated three villages in Sampang sub district, Madura Island, East Java Province, on Thursday.
The affected villages were Gunung Madda, Pasean, and Pangung. The flood waters reached a height of up to 40 centimeters.
The floods were caused by the overflowing of the Kalimuning river and submerged around 200 houses and poultry farming areas.
Tens of hectares of plantation area, traditional markets, and two elementary schools were also flooded.
A suspension bridge at Tasean, Pasean village, was damaged, cutting off access to urban area.
"This area is frequently flooded," Rahman, a local resident said.
The floods did not claim any lives and caused material losses worth hundreds of millions of rupiah.
Meanwhile, flood waters inundating wide areas of West Java regency of Karawang over the past few days had begun receding recently.
The foods caused by the overflowing of the Citarum River had inundated at least 35 villages in 10 sub-districts with more than 15,000 houses.
According to Karawang regency's social welfare authorities, the worst hit villages were found in the sub-districts of Telukjambe Timur, Karawang Barat, and Pakisjaya.
Head of Karawang district's social welfare office, Banuara Nadeak, said the overflowing of the Citarum River was the cause of the floods in 10 sub-districts, namely Telukjambe Timur, Karawang Barat, Pakisjaya, Telukjambe Barat, Ciampel, Batujaya, Pakisjaya, Rengasdengklok, Jayakerta, and Klari.
