ACFTA EXPECTED TO AROUSE SENSE OF NATIONALISM

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, April 1 (ANTARA) - The ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) is expected to arouse Indonesian people's sense of nationalism to use domestic products, an observer here said.

"Using domestic products is one of the ways to face ACFTA. The people of Indonesia can show their sense of nationalism by using domestic products," economic observer Mukti Fajar of Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University said here on Thursday.

He said Indonesian people should learn from Chinese people who use their own domestic products.

The people of China, according to him, wanted to use home-made motorcycles, although their appearance was not as good as Japanese made ones.

In addition, he said the Indonesian government should be able to apply a number of strategies to face the free trade challenges.

He said the Indonesian government should make a regulation for foreign investors, especially from China, who want to invest in Indonesia to cooperate with local partners.

"The cooperation is intended to protect local businessmen especially in big industries," Mukti Fajar said.

He said the government should also give subsidy to its products which were less competitive with Chinese products because they were much cheaper than domestic products.

"The subsidy is one of security measures which is permitted in ACFTA agreement," Mukti Fajar said.

He said ACFTA which has been effective since January 1, 2010 was inevitable, because it has been prepared since 2003 and therefore it should be faced although it inflicted pros and cons.
