RI CONSTANTLY ENCOURAGING DOHA ROUND

London, April 1 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Ambassador/Deputy Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization Erwidodo said the completion of the Doha round negotiations needs to be encouraged by intensifying the technical discussions in Geneva or through ministerial political negotiations.

Ambassador Erwidodo made the statement as head of the Indonesian delegation to WTO stocktaking meetings in Geneva, Antara in London said Thursday.

Speaking on behalf of G-33, Erwidodo said expressed readiness to continue technical discussions with the exporting countries in reaching a compromise of the Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM)architecture.

G-33 demanded a simplified SSM architecture and easily operated for an effective protection of the farmers of the developing countries against the high flow of imports and the drop in global prices.

In the meantime, WTO Director General Pascal Lamy said the stocktaking is aimed at evaluating accurately the achievements that had been made, identifying the remaining gaps and their size of all sectors of the Doha Round which had been going on for the last 8 years, and then decide on future steps to close the gaps toward the completion of the Doha Round as soon as possible..

The WTO director general also hoped the stocktaking would send a strong signal to the world on the importance of setting the Doha Round.

The chief negotiators of all sectors, including agriculture, industry, services, rights to intellectual riches, environment, devellopment, trade facilities, conflict settlement, fishery subsidy, anti-dumping and subsidies, presented their factual reports on the development of the negotiations including the remaining gaps.
