UN Secretary General, Tajik president focus on bilateral cooperation.
DUSHANBE, April 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Secretary General of the United
Nations Ban Ki-moon and Tajikistani President Emomali Rakhmon had a
meeting in Dushanbe on Monday to discuss water and energy problems and
prospects for cooperation between the Central Asian countries, the press service of the Tajikistani head of state told Itar-Tass.
The UN Secretary General arrived in Dushanbe on a two-day working
visit as a part of his tour to the post-Soviet Central Asian countries,
the press service added.
"The sides discussed prospects for comprehensive cooperation between
Tajikistan and the United Nations Organisation, the decline of the world
financial crisis's impact on the republic, as well as removal of obstacles
in the development of the regional interaction between the Central Asian
countries," the presidential press service said.
"During the meeting, Ban Ki-moon and Rakhmon exchanged views on the
regional security issues, recent developments in Afghanistan and the
impact on the neighbour countries, as well as the importance of the joint
response to terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking," the press service
said.
In the format of the visit, the UN Secretary General visited an
exhibition devoted to the minefield clearance in the epicenters of
Tajikistan's domestic warfare of 1992-1997, and victims of the
anti-personnel landmines.
Ban Ki-Moon also visited a presentation of the republic's large
hydropower facilities, including the Rogun HPP with the world's highest
35-metre dam.
