Kyrgyz residents seize building of regional administration.
BISHKEK, April 6 (Itar-Tass) - Some 1,000 residents in Kyrgyzstan's
town of Talas seized the building of regional administration on Tuesday, an official at the headquarters of the Opposition Social-Democratic Party told Itar-Tass.
The Social-Democratic Party claimed "elections of a people's governor
are underway." It is unclear if police are going to take any actions. The
Kyrgyz officials have declined to comment.
The local media reported that the people who had seized the building
appointed Koisun Kurmanaliyeva acting governor.
The republic's Interior Ministry has refrained from comments.
Some media outlets said the opposition leader planned "curultais"
(assemblies) in various parts of the republic on April 7, at which they
wanted to express their no confidence in the country's' leadership.
The unrest in Talas followed the detention by police of opposition
leader, deputy head of the Ata-Meken party Bolot Sherniyazov.
But police claimed Sherniyazov had been taken to the local interior
department to hear a warning about the inadmissibility of unsanctioned
protest actions.
