INDIAN ARRESTED FOR SMUGGLING KETAMINE TO INDONESIA
Jakarta, April 6 (ANTARA) - Indonesian customs officers at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport foiled an Indian national`s attempt to smuggle 15 kilograms of Ketamine on Monday.
Customs office spokesperson Evi Suhartantyo said here on Tuesday that the drug smuggler could be detected buy the customs authorities` comprehensive analysis on passengers` stuff.
The suspect only identified as BN hid the 15 kilograms of the Ketamine in 15 silver plastic bags.
Suhartantyo said the 55-year-old suspect arrived at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport by Thai Airways with flight number TG-433 on Monday from Bangkok.
"BN mixed the Ketamine in packs of various foodstuffs like rice, sugar and flour," Suhartantyo said.
The suspect told customs officers that the Ketamine were brought from Chennai, India, and that he was just a courier with a promised payment of 5,000 rupees.
Despite his confession that it was his first visit to Indonesia, the customs authorities suspected that he belonged to an international drug smuggling syndicate.
The suspect was handed over to the police for further investigation. According to local market price, 15 kilograms of Ketamine was sold at Rp15 billion, Suhartantyo said.
If found guilty, the suspect may face a maximum 15 years in jail and a fine of Rp1.5 billion.
Indonesia is among a number of Asian countries facing a threat of drug smuggling syndicates.
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) reported there were 3.6 million drug users in Indonesia in 2008.
The drug users came from various social and professional backgrounds, including artists, musicians, students, politicians, and policemen.
A police officer in Barito Utara district, Central Kalimantan province, was recently fired after a local court found him guilty of consuming methyl amphetamine.
