Medvedev to open Russian Centre in Astana
ASHGABAT, July 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will open the first Russian Centre in Kazakhstan's capital of Astana and discuss atomic energy, space exploration, and integration with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kremlin aide Sergei Prikhodko said.
The agenda also includes the construction of the Caspian Gas Pipeline
and the increased performance of the Central Asia - Centre Gas Pipeline.
It will be Medvedev's second visit to Kazakhstan in the capacity of
president. He made his the first visit to Astana on May 22-23.
"The new meeting will focus on integration in the Eurasian Economic
Community (EurAsEC), the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO),
and the CIS," Prikhodko said. "Kazakhstan is Russia's ally in the
promotion of CIS integration and the customs union."
Medvedev and Nazarbayev will concentrate on "the promotion of
strategic partnership through high-tech and innovative cooperation."
"Boosting cooperation in science-intensive industries, including
nanotechnologies, civilian atomic energy, space exploration, and
military-technical contacts, becomes particularly important," Prikhodko
said.
"Close cooperation in the fuel and energy sector, the coordination of
approaches towards improving existing and building new pipeline routes
traditionally play an important role in the Russian and Kazakhstani
economies. The agenda also includes the implementation of such mutually
beneficial projects as the Caspian Pipeline and the increased performance
of the Central Asia - Centre Gas Pipeline," Prikhodko said.
"The heads of state will also discuss preparations for the next forum
of the leaders of the border-lying regions in Kazakhstan's Aktyubinsk on
September 12-13," he said.
Border-lying regions account for about 40 percent of bilateral trade
between Russia and Kazakhstan. Trade turnover between the two countries
amounted to 5.93 billion U.S. dollars in January-April 2008, growing by
28.8 percent from the same period of last year.
