INFANT WITH RARE DISEASE DIES
Semarang, Indonesia, April 10 (ANTARA) - Bilqis Anindya Passa , a 17-month- old infant who suffered from "atresia bilier", finally died here on Saturday while still being treated at Dr Kariadi General Hospital due to a lethal bacteria attack.
"Bilqis died at around 3.15 pm after going through a critical condition since 2pm," Prof Dr. AG Soemantri who had proposed a liver transplant to cure her.
He said Bilqis died because her lungs were attacked by lethal bacteria that worsened her conditions , caused her heart beat to weaken and made breathing difficult.
"There are at least three bacteria that were detected to be attacking Bilqis, namely 'acenobacter bowmani', 'klebsiela pneumonia' which attacks lungs, and 'seratia marcescens' that attacks blood," he said.
Soemantri said 40 percent of atresia bilier patients suffered from the conditions. Of 10 atresia bilier patients four have the potential to be attacked by the bacteria.
"We have done what we could to fight the bacteria but God disposes. We never promised full recovery but did promise to do our best," he said.
He said all possible efforts had been made for Bilqis' recovery including involving various specialists to deal with it.
He said he could not say it was a failure but because conditions and resilience differed from one person to another.
"Atresia bilier indeed requires complicated handling so that preparations for a liver transplant take a long time, " he said.
He made the statement in reponse to public questions on why the transplant plan was taking a long time to be carried out. "It takes a long time indeed. An operation is impossible if conditions are not good," he said.
Dr Tatty Ermin Setiati who is alos a member of the team treating Bilqis said that Bilqis' conditions were indeed unstable and so she had to be moved to another ward for treatment.
"Bilqis initially suffered from 'kelbsiella pneumonia' but she recovered from it. However, later, she had a relapse and finally new bacteria 'seratia marcescens' attacked her blood making her conditions to deteriorate," Tatty said.
Bilqis had been treated at the hospital for around two months before she finally passed away.
