VP TO LEAVE FOR WASHINGTON FOR NUCLEAR SECURITY SUMMIT
Jakarta, April 10 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono is to leave for Washington, the US, to attend a Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) on April 12-13.
"Tonight he will leave for Washington for the NSS. He will lead the Indonesian delegatin to the summit," his spokesman, Yopie Hidayat, said here on Saturday.
Boediono and delegation would take a Garuda Indonesia commercial flight via Tokyo.
His delegation includes Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Darwin Saleh and other senior officials concerned with nuclear power.
Yopie said the NSS was actually the pledge made by Barack Obama during his presidential campaign. At the time he said that in his first tenure or within four years men will have a new order to secure nuclear weapons and nuclear materials which could be used to make weapons.
The security is needed to prevent the fall of nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorists to threaten the lives of millions of innocent people.
Not only the US, a lot of other countries also do not like to see terrorists possessing nuclear weapons, which will be a real danger for mankind.
That is why, he said, 45 countries have enthusiastically welcomed the US invitation by sending their delegations there including Indonesia.
He said until Saturday it had been reported that 42 delegations to the meeting would be led directly by their heads of states or vice heads of states including Indonesia, showing the importance of the meeting.
Yopie said Vice President Boediono along with representatives from the Non-Aligned Movement would also hold a special meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden before the conference.
"The summit will be very important because Indonesia is currently the NAM's head of nuclear affairs. So far the NAM members have always been critical to the US policy on nuclear proliferation," he said.
Yopie said Vice President Boediono also has other agenda while in the US such as holding a discussion with Millenium Challenge Corporation CEO Daniel Yohannes and a dinner with top US businessmen.
The meeting will be organized by USINDO which is an independent organization that has so far become an unofficial "ambassador" seeking to introduce Indonesia to the US.
Another event which is also very important Boediono would attend is the signing of an agreement with the Overseas Private Investment Corporatin (OPIC).'
OPIC is an independent agency belonging to the US Federal government helping US businessmen invest and open markets in developing countries and providing a political risk insurance policy for them.
The head of the Capital Investment Coordinating Board, Gita Wiryawan, would represent Indonesia in the signing of the agreement.
Before returning home Yopie said Vice President Boediono would stop over in New York on April 14 to become one of the panelists in a round-table discussion on achieving Millenium Development Goals at the UN Headquarters.
