TVRI EXPECTED TO BROADCAST QUALITY PROGRAMS
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, April 11 (ANTARA) - Noted Indonesian film director Garin Nugroho said here Saturday the state TV station, TVRI, could serve the public with quality programs.
"The TVRI can meet the public needs for elements of pluralism and multiculturalism in our television programs," he told a seminar at the Yogyakarta cultural center.
The pluralistic and multicultural aspects in TV programs were relevant to the Indonesian people's condition. Those aspects had so far been absent in lots of private TV stations' programs, he said.
"Lots of our TV programs, specially those broadcast by private TV stations, tend to promote pop culture but they betray Indonesians' own pop culture," he said.
In dealing with this situation, the Indonesian Broadcast Commission should take firm actions against those violating the broadcasting ethics by closing the TV stations, he said.
The commission's people could use such bills as the consumer protection law or the children protection law, Nugroho said.
Lots of parents, educationists, as well as religious and community leaders in the country have complained such programs as TV series and infotainment which show violence, betrayal, broken home, and artists' divorce.
