Putin, Tusk laid flowers at crash site of Polish president`s plane

SMOLENSK, Russia, April 11 (Itar-Tass) - Polish Prime Minister Donald
Tusk arrived in Smolensk late on Saturday. His Russian counterpart
Vladimir Putin met him near an emergency headquarters located just a
hundred meters away from the crash site of a Tu-154 plane of Polish
President Lech Kaczynski.
The Russian and Polish prime ministers examined the crash site. Putin
told his Polish colleagues how the events were unfolding 12 hours ago when
the plane of President Kaczynski disappeared from radars.
Putin and Tusk laid flowers at a wreckage of the Tu-154 fuselage.
Donald Tusk kneeled down as he was laying the flowers. After that the two
prime ministers who spoke to each other in Russian hugged each other and
went to the rescuers who kept working even with the coming of dusk.
After paying tribute to the memory of the dead, Putin and Tusk went to
the emergency headquarters where they had a bilateral meeting. Then, the
head of Russian ministries informed Donald Tusk about the investigations,
the identification procedures and mourning events.
At the moment, Prime Minister Putin, Russian Minister for Emergency
Situations Sergei Shoigu and Vice-Premier Sergei Ivanov are staying at the
emergency headquarters.
A Tu-154 plane of Polish President Lech Kaczynski crashed in the
outskirts of the town of Pechersk, the Smolensk region, at around 10:50
Moscow time on Saturday. All the 96 passengers onboard, including the
Polish president, his wife Maria and other members of an official Polish
delegation, died. They were supposed to participate in commemorative
events at the Katyn memorial.
The twin brother of the late Polish president, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has
also visited the crash site.
An employee of the Polish embassy in Moscow told reporters that
Jaroslaw Kaczynski had arrived in Smolensk by car. Just like Prime
Minister Tusk he decided to land at an airport in Vitebsk, Belarus, and to
get to Smolensk by car. In the meantime, Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev announced April 12 to be a day of mourning for the Polish
president in Russia.
