MOSCOW, April 12 (Itar-Tass) -- The problem of Afghan-produced drugs
might become the most large-scale one in the 21st century, head of Russia'
s anti-drug authority Viktor Ivanov told a news conference on Monday.
According to Ivanov, "about 100 countries have been affected" by
Afghan-produced heroin. "The problem of drug production in Afghanistan has
all the chances to be the biggest one in the 21st century," Ivanov said,
adding that from the century beginning about one million people had died
of Afghan opium, and about 16 million were "in this or that way affected,
suffering physical and moral damages."
In his words, Afghanistan currently produces twice as much heroin than
it was produced ten years ago throughout the world. Moreover, Afghanistan
produces other drugs, having become "producer number one of hashish,
outscoring Morocco this year."
