Jammu, July 5 (PTI) About 20 people were injured in Kathua town when they clashed with police in protest against cops beating up some residents, while the hour-long curfew relaxation at Bhaderwah town passed off peacefully Saturday.

Police and C.R.P.F. personnel allegedly beat some people who had come out of their houses in the morning to fetch milk and vegetables in Kathua town besides detaining some of them for defying curfew orders.

As these reports spread in the town, about 4000 people from different areas of the town assembled near the mini secretariat to protest the incident.

As the protesters tried to physically assault the S.S.P. J.P. Singh and also indulged in stone pelting, police and C.R.P.F. personnel swung into action and resorted to lathicharge and teargassing.

When the battle continued for some time resulting in injuries to about 20 people police fired a few rounds in the air to disperse the mob of protesters.

Reports from Bhaderwah town said that curfew relaxation period for one hour from 1300 hours in Ghatha/Udrana area passed off peacefully.

Curfew was imposed in Bhaderwah town on July 2 after tension mounted due to injuries to 18 people in clashes and grenade attack by unidentified militants on protesters, demanding cancellation of the order revoking land transfer to the Amarnath shrine board.

Meanwhile, the situation in other curfew-bound areas of Samba and Jammu city was peaceful today, officials said.

Curfew was imposed in some parts of Jammu city on July 1 after protesters demanding cancellation of land transfer order to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board clashed with police and indulged in stone pelting on vehicles.

It was extended next day to the whole city when protesters held demonstrations at different places defying the curfew.

Authorities Saturday decided to relax curfew in Jammu north for one hour from 1730 hours and in Jammu south for one and a half hours from 1900 hours to enable people to purchase essential commodities, officials said.

Curfew was imposed in samba on July 2 and Kathua on July 3 following incidents of violence and clashes between police and the demonstrators.

Bandh continued in Kishtwar and Udhampur towns without any untoward incident, they said.

Senior civil and police officers were closely monitoring the situation, they said adding that police, C.R.P.F. and Rapid Action Force (R.A.F.) have been deployed to maintain law and order in curfew-bound areas.

Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sudhanshu Pandey said that the government has decided to provide rations and L.P.G. in different areas of the city and other towns of the division where curfew is in force.

The Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (C.A.P.D.) department would ply mobile vans for providing eatables and L.P.G. cylinders to people facing inconvenience due to shortage of essential supplies during curfew period, he said.
