Medvedev, Nazarbayev to discuss bilateral cooperation

ASTANA, July 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Before the departure for a G8 summit in Japan Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will have a meeting with Kazakhstani counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev on Sunday.
The presidents are expected to discuss the development of cooperation between the countries in nuclear power and space industries, as well as the integration in the CIS. The leaders of the countries will also discuss the construction of a Caspian gas pipeline and a higher capacity of the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline, Russian presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko told Itar-Tass.
Medvedev visits Kazakhstan in the capacity of president already for the second time. On Saturday, the leaders of the countries attended a solemn meeting on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Kazakhastani capital of Astana. On Sunday, Medvedev will congratulate Nursultan Nazarbayev on his 68th birthday.
Speaking at the solemn meeting devoted to the Astana anniversary
Medvedev said, "Kazakhstan is not only a strategic partner for Russia. We are pleased sincerely with Kazakhstan's victories and successes as with ours own, we value friendship with this country, supporting each other, like only brothers can support," the Russian head of state pointed out.
Nazarbayev confirmed the country's commitment to developing allied
relations with Russia. "Russia was always and will be a reliable strategic ally of Kazakhstan." He recalled that on July 6 both countries would mark the 10th anniversary of signing a fundamental Russian-Kazakhstani document- the Declaration on Eternal Friendship and Allied Relations.
On May 22, Medvedev paid a state visit to Astana and discussed
broader bilateral cooperation. At the Sunday meeting the presidents "will discuss integration issues within the framework of the Organisation of Eurasian Economic Cooperation (EurAsEC), the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)," Prikhodko said, adding that "Kazakhstan is Russia's real ally in promoting the integration processes in the CIS states and within the framework of the Customs Union." Medvedev and Nazarbayev will also discuss "the development of strategic partnership in line with broader cooperation in high technologies and the innovative sphere." "Closer cooperation has become recently particularly important in science-intensive industries, including nanotechnologies, the civil nuclear power industry, the peaceful
space exploration, as well as in the military-technical sphere," Prikhodko said.
"Close cooperation in the fuel and energy sector, the harmonization of approaches to modernizing the existing pipelines and laying down new pipelines play a traditionally important role for the economies of Russia and Kazakhstan," the Russian presidential aide said. "The implementation of such large-scale mutually beneficial projects as the construction of a Caspian gas pipeline and a higher capacity of the Central Asia-Center pipeline is on the agenda of bilateral cooperation," Prikhodko said.
"The presidents will also discuss the preparations for a regular forum of the chiefs of the border regions of the countries that is scheduled in Kazakhstan's Aktyubinsk on September 12-13," the presidential aide said.
The border trade accounts for 40 percent of the bilateral trade, which amounted to 5.93 billion dollars in January-April 2008, increasing by 28.8 percent as compared with the same period in 2007. The overall bilateral trade has exceeded 16.5 billion dollars for the past year.
Russia gives close attention to expanding the humanitarian cooperation with Kazakhstan and to the support for Russian compatriots living in this country.
After the visit to Kazakhstan Dmitry Medvedev will leave for a G8
summit, which will be held on the Japanese island of Hokkaido on July 7-9.
