G8 states not to assume commitments for global warming struggle
TOYAKO (Japan), July 6 (Itar-Tass) -- The G8 leaders do not intend to put to paper concrete commitments of their countries in order to resolve the problem of the negative aftermath of the global warming.
Meanwhile, Russia will set concrete parameters in its national plan, which is under drafting in order to improve ecological and power saving situation, said a high-ranking official in the Russian delegation, which will work at the G8 summit in Japan.
"The document on global warming does not set any figures as concrete commitments of the countries, but outlines only desirable parameters," he said. "We are ready to support the common goal in the global warming problems, if all other industrially developed countries support it," the Russian official said.
"In the medium-term outlook we will assume some obligations under our own national plan in order to improve ecological and power saving
situation in the development of some industries," he said.
According to him, the global warming problems can be called the major intrigue of the upcoming G8 summit. "It is important for us to understand whether other countries are ready or not ready to assume some commitments and join the post-Kyoto negotiating process in order to reach a final solution in 2009, but it will become clear only on the third final day of the summit," he said.
The G8 states still have different approaches to the global warming problem, the high-ranking representative of the Russian delegation said. "However, the G8 leaders share the position that it is desirable to complete the negotiating process before 2009, but all developed economies in the world should join a final agreement," he believes.
He acknowledged that the global warming problem raised many questions during the run-up to the G8 summit. "There are some disagreements, but we formulate some clauses that allow making some progress," the official in the Russian delegation said.
