US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues visits Altai reg.
BARNAUL, April 15 (Itar-Tass) - U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global
Women's Issues Melanne Verveer arrives on Thursday in Barnaul to get
acquainted with programs for family strengthening worked out in the Altai
region, sources from the regional administration told Tass. The
ambassador-at-large will be accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Russia John
Beyrle.
In the Altai region, Melanne Verveer will visit the only in Russia
State Crisis Center for Men. In 2002 the center got the status of a base
experimental establishment of the Russian Ministry of Healthcare and
Social Development. "We have a lot of different programs for strengthening
families and helping those who divorce," center's director Svetlana
Govorukhina said. "Of course we also influence women, but indirectly,
through men," she added.
The U.S. ambassador-at-large is also expected to meet with Altai
Region Governor Alexander Karlin and the leadership of the only in the
country women's public chamber at the governor. She will also take part in
round table discussions on the role of women in the economic, political
and social life of the Altai region, organized by local non-commercial and
public organizations.
From there, Melanne Verveer will travel to Lithuania and then to Egypt
where she will continue discussing programs devoted to a bigger role of
women in the society.

BUENOS AIRES, April 15 (Itar-Tass) - Russian and Argentinean business
has good prospects for cooperation, including in high-tech spheres,
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting here with
representatives of two countries' business circles.
"The Russian economy has entered the stage of modernisation, and
cooperation between Russian and Argentinean business could be very
useful," the Russian leader said. "There can be no future for our
economies without high technologies," he stressed.
Medvedev noted that representatives of different business spheres were
present at the meeting. "All directions of cooperation that you present
are topical," the president stressed. He paid special attention to
business people representing the pharmaceutical business.
The Russian leader said work on new medicines was among priorities of
the Russian economy. "We are interested in cooperation between our
companies in that sector," Medvedev stressed.
He also noted big cooperation prospects in power industry, transport
infrastructure as well as agro-industrial business. The president noted
that such cooperation could include not only trade, but also joint
projects. "The market, no matter what kind of a market it is, is not
boundless, and joint agencies increase chances of the company to be
presented at the market," he noted.
.Bushehr power plant to be launched in August - Rosatom head.
BUENOS AIRES, April 15 (Itar-Tass) - The Bushehr nuclear power plant
will be launched in August, and possible sanctions against Iran will not
prevent that, the head of the Russian Rosatom state nuclear energy
corporation, Sergei Kiriyenko, said on Thursday.
"Bushehr will be launched in summer, in August," he said. "We are
strictly on schedule," Kiriyenko stressed.
"Sanctions against Iran that are discussed more and more often, have
nothing to do with Bushehr," he said. "That nuclear power plant does not
invite any questions, and it is absolutely clear to everyone that Bushehr
poses no danger for the non-proliferation regime," he stressed.
"That is why no sanctions can be imposed on it," Kiriyenko is
confident. "On the contrary, such cooperation, the experience of peaceful
uses of atomic energy must be supported," he added.
.Russia, Argentina sign energy, space and other agreements.
BUENOS AIRES, April 15 (Itar-Tass) - Within the framework of an
official visit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Russia and Argentina
have signed several agreements and contracts in the sphere of
military-technical cooperation, power industry, space and transport.
In particular, a contract for the supply of two Mi-171E helicopters
for the Argentinean Defence Ministry was signed after Medvedev's talks
with Argentinean counterpart Christina Fernandez de Kirchner. The head of
the Rosoboronexport state corporation Anatoly Isaikin signed the contract
from the Russian side.
The Rosatom state corporation and the Argentinean Ministry of Federal
Planning, Public Investment and Services signed a protocol on directions
of cooperation on peaceful uses of atomic energy.
Russia's VNIIzarubezhgeologia signed an agreement with the same
ministry on cooperation in the sphere of geological research of
hydrocarbon deposits and deposits of solid minerals.
The Roskosmos federal space agency and the Argentinean National Space
Activities Commission signed a memorandum on mutual understanding in
cooperation on the use and development of the GLONASS system.
A memorandum on cooperation in the sphere of railway transportation
was signed between Russian Railways and the Argentinean State Secretariat
for Transport.
The Saturn scientific development and production centre signed an
agreement of intent with the government of Buenos Aires Province on joint
activity to update a gas-turbine thermal power plant.
The presidents of the two countries made a joint statement timed to
mark the 200th anniversary of Argentinean statehood Argentina and the
125th anniversary of Russian-Argentinean diplomatic relations.
