CHINESE PM POSTPONES INDONESIA TRIP DUE TO QINGHAI QUAKE

Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has postponed a trip to Indonesia originally scheduled to take place on April 23-24, 2010 due to the earthquake that hit Yushu county, Qinghai, last Wednesday (April 14), a source said.

"Indonesia understands the reason behind the postponement of the prime minister`s trip to Indonesia. Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa has also sent a letter of condolences to his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi," spokesperson at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Tengku Faizasyah, said here on Friday.

He said both sides had already made the necessary preparations for Jiabao`s visit to Indonesia. "Of the 14 treaties to be signed during the prime minister`s visit, three or four are now already in the finalisation process," Faizasyah said.

The postponement of Wen`s visit would not make all the preparations useless. Instead, he added, the postponement would give more opportunities to related departments from both countries to finalise the other treaties.

Asked whether China had already rescheduled Wen`s visit to Indonesia, Faizasyah said a new date had yet to be discussed.

The death toll from the earthquake in China`s remote and mountainous Yushu County, Qinghai province, had risen to 617.

Convoys with food, tents and medicine are rumbling into Yushu, where most buildings were ruined by the 6.9 quake early on Wednesday morning.

Survivors in the ethnic Tibetan town spent the night huddled under blankets while temperatures dropped below freezing.

More than 10,000 people were injured and thousands rendered homeless in freezing conditions after a series of quakes and aftershocks caused many of the low, mud-brick buildings in the county to collapse, residents and state media said.

The main 6.9 quake was centered in the mountains that separates Qinghai province from the Tibet Autonomous Region.
