PRESIDENT ASKS PEOPLE NOT TO BE EASILY PROVOKED

Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the people not to be too easily provoked but help maintain peace, security, and order.

The president made the request in a dialog with the heirs of respected Muslim scholar Habib bin Muhammad Al Hadad, known as Mbah Priok, at Wisma Negara here on Friday.

Habib Ali and Habib Salim, the heirs of Mbah Priok who spread Islam in Jakarta in the 18th century, had an informal meeting with the head of state in the company of Minister/State Secretary Sudi Silalahi and cleric Habib Munzier Al Musawwa.

They met with the president following Wednesday's bloody violence in Tanjung Priok port area where thousands of public order officers marched to a graveyard complex where the tomb of Mbah Priok is located.

"We meet with the president, and thanks God the head of state will sign an epigraphy at Mbah Priok tomb and ask the people to refrain themselves from getting involved in a riot around the area," Habib Ali Zaenal bin Abdurrahman al Idrus said after meeting with the president.

The two heirs of Mbah Priok then expressed hope that a polemic would no longer occur in the future and that the tomb would be renovated and opened for pilgrims.

Wednesday's violence claimed three lives and injured hundreds other people.

"I have a serious concern about the incident. It should not have happened if there were a good coordination between the authority and the people," President Yudhoyono said.

The head of state then asked that mediation process that had been made could be continued in order to reach the best possible solution to the case.

The dialog between the president and the heirs of Mbah Priok proceed in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

In a press conference on the Tanjung Priok cemetery chaos held at the Presidential Office in here on Wednesday night, the President said the cemetery's status remained unchanged, and a solution would be sought by mediation involving all concerned.

The President pointed out that the chaos and violence in Tanjung Priok could have been prevented if the security authorities were willing to study the social situation prevailing in the area.
