INDONESIA ABLE TO HANDLE NARROWING OF LEFT MAIN

Jakarta, Apr 16 (ANTARA- Indonesia has become one of very few countries in Asia with the ability to handle arteriosclerosis of the left main of humans.

Cardiologist of Binawaluya Hospital DR Muhammad Munawar said in Jakarta Friday the narrowing of the left main is the most serious of coronary heart diseases, as almost two thirds of the heart lacks oxygen and adequate nutrition, which caused a great shortage of blood supply to the heart.

This condition may cause serious damage to the muscles of the heart and may eventually lead to death, he said.

He said that if a patient suffers from narrowing of the left main, the doctors would suggest a heart bypass but not all such patients may agree on the decision.

In the meantime, narrowing of the left main could be handled without surgery, namely by applying a technique called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), he said.

This special technique had been specially designed to open a certain spot at the narrowed artery by using Drug Eluting Stent (DES) and Drug Eluting Baloon (DEB).

The PCI method is relatively shorter, safe and normally satisfactory, he said.

In the United States this type of handling a heart patient with the narrowing of the left main, still discouraged most doctors, who rather suggest a by pass.

In the meantime, head of the cardiovascular center of the Clinical Research Institute in Rotenburg, Germany, Dr. Martin Unverdorben, said that the narrowing of the left main is very difficult to handle.

The left main has to branches of the main artery called Romus Circumflex and Left Anterior Descending (LAD).

Binawalluyo hospital is the first private cardiological hospital in Indonesia with professional and highly reliable cardiologists, and complete and modern medical facilities and equipment.
