JAKARTA'S PUBLIC ORDER POLICING UNIT TO REMAIN: MINISTER

Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - Law and Human Rights Affairs Minister Patrialis Akbar said there was no plan to disband the Jakarta city administration's Public Order Policing Unit (Satpol PP) following last Wednesday's bloody incident in Koja, North Jakarta. .

"There is no plan to disband the unit," the minister said here on Friday.

He said the Satpol PP was needed to assist the city government's in fulfilling its public order responsibilities but he admitted the mechanism to use the unit and the exercise of its authority needed to be improved.

The minister said, when the Jakarta city government intended to deploy Satpol PP personnel, it should do so in coordination with all the stakeholders involved.

"We need the Satpol PP but its services should be used through good coordination with third parties involved," Akbar said.

He said the Satpol PP must serve as an instrument in the hands of the city government to maintain public order.

Various quarters have called for the disbandment of the unit following physical clashes between Satpol PP personnel and local residents of Koja near Jakarta's Tanjung Priok port in which three people died and over 100 others were injured.

The incident happened when more than 1,000 Satpol PP officers were mobilized to demolish illegal buildings around a tomb of an 18th century Muslim scholar in the area.
