RI FOREIGN MINISTER TO ATTEND TEHRAN DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE
Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa is to attend the International Conference on Disarmament to be held in Tehran, Iran, on April 17-18, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.
"The conference will focus on issues related to disarmament and weapons of mass destruction. Indonesia, as one of the signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), believes disarmament is one of the aspects that must be taken into consideration in relation with the nuclear weapons issue," the ministry's spokesman, Tengku Faizasyah, said here on Friday.
He said Indonesia's participation in the conference clearly indicated the country was not only paying attention to such matters as the security of nuclear materials as discussed at the nuclear conference in Washington DC last Saturday (April 10) but also to disarmament.
Faizasyah said Indonesia was consistently supporting development of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. However, if the technology was used to make weapons, Indonesia would oppose it.
Last April 10, Iran unveiled its third-generation nuclear centrifuges and a facsimile of the nuclear fuel being produced for Tehran's research reactor at a ceremony held on Saturday at Milad Tower in observance of the country`s National Nuclear Technology Day.
The third-generation centrifuges were more efficient and can enrich uranium at a faster rate. The separating capability of the centrifuges was six times higher than that of its predecessors.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the director of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization , Ali-Akbar Salehi, outlined Iran's nuclear achievements at the function.
Ahmadinejad said sanctions will not hinder Iran`s nuclear progress. "No country can halt the Iranian nation's progress," he stated.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ahmadinejad called the new nuclear arms reduction treaty, also known as the new START pact, signed by the United States and Russia in Prague on Thursday, a "big lie."
He reiterated Tehran's position that Iran was prepared to conduct a nuclear fuel swap and share its nuclear expertise with its neighbors.
Ahmadinejad proposed the formation of new bloc of countries seeking nuclear disarmament.
Ahmadinejad said nuclear disarmament would never become a reality if the powers that produce and possess nuclear weapons had their way.
