KOREAN CORNER OPENED AT RI`S NAT`L LIBRARY

Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - The Korean embassy to Indonesia in Jakarta opened a Korean corner dubbed "Window on Korea" at the National Library here on Friday.

The Korean corner in Jakarta was expected to improve the two countries ties through their national libraries, said Korean Ambassador to Indonesia Kim Ho Young in his remarks on the occasion.

Ambassador Kim said that a nation's cultural treasures as written in books and manuscripts must be rescued and conserved, and the opening of the Korean corner was a step to introduce Korean culture to Indonesia and at the same time to preserve it.

The chief of the Korean National Library , Young Shin Eun, who also attended the event, said the Korean government would provide Indonesia's National Library with more collections on request.

"In the near future, we will provide space for an Indonesian corner in Korea, and we will also conduct a program for exchanges of personnel between Korea's and Indonesia's national libraries," he said.

The head of Indonesian's National Library Lilik Soelistyowati. said on the occasion the cooperation with South Korea was focused in the public collection procurement on Korean from Indonesia, bibliographic control, exchange of information on the Indonesia-Korea maintenance materials that are stored in the libraries.

"Library also considered as a very significant resource of cultural heritage and warm relations between the two national libraries that reflects the strong relationship between our two countries," she said.

As for the initial effort, the Window on Korea is now filled with some two thousands Korean book and magazine collections, also some Korean cultural movies and music stored on the first floor of the National Library located at Jalan Merdeka Selatan, central Jakarta.

The Korean government would also provide some 200 books in the future based on the corner's needs and an evaluation of public interest , Lilik said.
