BI: 13 BANKS REQUEST US$3 BLN WORTH OF FOREIGN LOANS

Jakarta, April 16 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) early this year received requests for foreign loans worth US$3 billion from 13 national banks.

"Thirteen banks in their business plans indicated their intention to seek foreign loans," the 'senior economic analyst at BI's Investor Relations Unit, Elsya Chani, said here on Friday.

She said the requests were still in the nature of proposals. They needed to followed by formal applications for foreign loans which would later be processed by BI.

"It will take around a month to process the applications," she said.

Elsya said demand for foreign loans increased this year compared with two years ago.

In 2009, BI approved applications for US$2.79 billion worth of foreign credit but only US$1.71 billion was realized while in 2008 the approvals reached US$2.81 billion and realizations was recorded at US$2.11 billion.

"Indeed realization declined in 2009 due to the global crisis," she said.

The fact that demand for loans was now higher than before showed that the economy was moving again, she said. "But it's true that usually not all of the proposals are realized," she added.

Elsya said each of the banks' applications would be analyzed "so that not all banks would enter the market simultaneously to raise interest."
