Barroso calls on G-8 leaders to conclude accord on climate by 2009
BERLIN, July 7 (Itar-Tass) - On the eve of the G-8 summit in Japan on July 7, European Commission Chairman Jose Manuel Barroso called on the major industrialised nations to perk up efforts in protection of world climate.
"The heads of state and government of the G-8 countries, including the
US, should seek concluding an all-out agreement on climate protection by
2009," Barroso said in an interview, published by the German Welt am
Sontag newspaper on Sunday.
"We need quick and efficient measures," the European Commission chief
emphasised. "In this connection, I call on summit participants to overstep
pledges, taken in Heiligendamm last year and, using a good example, to
push forward successfully."
Its participants in the previous G-8 summit, held in the north German
city of Heiligendamm on June 6-8, 2007, stated their intention to strive
for cutting emissions of greenhouse gases at least by 50 percent by 2050.
Barroso also expressed hope that countries with the transition
economies - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - will follow
suit of industrialised countries in climate protection if those assume the
role of trailblazers.
"If industrialised nations get down seriously to tackling the problem
and assume the role of pioneers in this process, countries with the
transition economies, such as China and India, as well as developing
countries will follow suit. Everyone should make his contribution."
